Governance and futures thinking
About
We use futures thinking to understand how people from across different sectors make decisions about long-term future change. Futures thinking explores possible futures by considering the potential implications and results of current trends, drivers and decisions. Futures thinking in water management helps to ensure decisions are resilient and flexible, to meet the needs of the environment and society now and in the future.
We work across disciplines to understand how scientific, technical, social, cultural, political and legal factors shape decisions related to water management. This includes analysing the various drivers of change, such as climate change, population trends, technological developments, and social and political changes.
We also consider how short-term constraints can affect attitudes and decisions about long-term water issues. Through surveys, interviews, workshops and focus groups, we find out what people value and care about, and work with decision makers to consider whether and how these values can be maintained into the future. We tailor these processes to suit specific needs and communities.
Our analysis brings together diverse elements to enable decision makers in water management to develop flexible and adaptive pathways to the future.
