Description
In this seminar, Dr Ken Anthony will discuss his work on models and decision-support products for the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program on the Great Barrier Reef.
Ken is a marine scientist with a passion for marine conservation. Ken started his career in Copenhagen (Denmark) as an environmental engineer, but transitioned to marine biology after his first coral reef encounter in the Seychelles in 1986. He has worked on the Great Barrier Reef since.
Ken’s roots are nerdy quantitative ecology. For his PhD he modelled how corals cope with turbid water. This earned him the nickname Dr Mud. Since then he has showed clear signs of ADHD by venturing into every area of marine science, from physical and chemical oceanography, complex ecosystem modelling, the mathematics of coral growth, ecological economics, and in the recent decade: Decision Science. His passion for connecting dots and endlessly asking annoying questions about the why, how, what, where and for whom landed him in a Senior Leadership role at AIMS in 2015.
Ken has since left senior leadership, and now leads a small star team of modellers and decision analysts including ANU collaborators. We deliver models and decision-support products for the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program on the GBR, and anyone in the world who needs us. We think we are making a difference by advising government and industries on how to be most effective with tax-payers money used for reef restoration. Our mission is to provide quality management and policy advice that can give coral reefs and people the best chance of sustaining their values in a warming but uncertain future.
