About

Associate Professor Barry Croke is a member of the Institute for Water Futures (jointly with the Fenner School of Environment and Society, and the Mathematical Sciences Institute) at the Australian National University. Barry has extensive experience in modelling natural systems and works on the development and testing of hydrological and integrated models, with a particular focus on sensitivity and uncertainty analysis. This includes understanding the uncertainty and limitations of data, and how this impacts on model predictions. Barry is currently the president-elect for the International Commission on Water Resources Systems, and the Australian National Representative to the International Association of Hydrological Sciences.

Research interests

My research looks at the development of models for prediction of streamflow and water quality, as well as integrated resource management.  I explore prediction of flow at ungauged sites, which requires techniques for predicting hydrologic response based on catchment attributes such as topography and land use. This involves development of models suitable for such work, as well as exploring the relationships between model parameters and key catchment attributes.  I reserach modelling water quality including estimation of sediment, nutrient and pathogen exports.  I also investige model response to uncertainty in parameter values and input data through sensitivity analysis. This is an important component of model development due to the sparse nature of environmental datasets.
